한국어 의문사 | Day41 Goal: Swap the unknown part with a question word

In Day40, you learned Yes/No questions with -요? and intonation.
In Day41, you learn Wh-questions (information questions).

The good news: Korean beginners don’t need to restructure the whole sentence.
You simply replace the unknown part with a question word and end with -요?

Examples:

(person) ___예요? → 누구예요?
(thing) ___예요? → 뭐예요?
(place) ___예요? → 어디예요?

The 6 essential Korean question words

누구 = who
뭐 (무엇) = what
어디 = where
언제 = when
왜 = why
어떻게 = how

Recommended beginner order:
누구/뭐/어디 → 언제 → 왜/어떻게

1) Placement rule: Put the question word in the “original slot”

Unlike English, Korean doesn’t strongly force the question word to the very front.
For beginners, the safest rule is:

Put the question word where the missing information would normally go.

그 사람은 제 친구예요. → 그 사람은 누구예요?
이거는 커피예요. → 이거는 뭐예요?
여기는 서울이에요. → 여기는 어디예요?

2) Memorize these as fixed phrases: 뭐예요 / 누구예요 / 어디예요

These three are so common that you should learn them as “chunks.”

뭐예요? = What is it?
누구예요? = Who is it?
어디예요? = Where is it?

Examples:

이거 뭐예요? → 센서예요.
저 사람 누구예요? → 제 동료예요.
여기가 어디예요? → 공장이에요.

3) “언제” questions: time and date (very easy)

“언제” fits smoothly into -요? questions.

언제 가요? → 내일 가요. / 지금 가요.
언제 와요? → 오후에 와요.
언제 시작해요? → 2시에 시작해요.

Tip: This connects perfectly to Day21–Day22 (time/date).

4) “왜” questions: ask for reasons (short answers are natural)

왜 안 가요? → 바빠요. / 시간이 없어요.
왜 늦었어요? → 길이 막혔어요.
왜요? → 그냥요. / 몰라요. / 괜찮아요.

Beginner note: “왜요?” doesn’t require a long explanation. Short is normal.

5) “어떻게” questions: method, way, process

어떻게 가요? → 지하철로 가요. / 택시로 가요. / 걸어서 가요.
이거 어떻게 해요? → 이렇게 해요. / 제가 도와줄게요.
어떻게 알았어요? → 친구가 말했어요.

Also very useful:

어떻게요? = “How?” / “In what way?” (asking for clarification)

6) Ready-to-use Q→A sets (memorize)

Q: 이거 뭐예요? → A: 커피예요. / 부품이에요.
Q: 저 사람 누구예요? → A: 제 친구예요. / 제 동료예요.
Q: 여기가 어디예요? → A: 회사예요. / 역이에요.
Q: 언제 가요? → A: 내일 가요. / 지금 가요.
Q: 왜 안 가요? → A: 바빠요. / 시간이 없어요.
Q: 어떻게 가요? → A: 지하철로 가요. / 차로 가요.
