Today you learn a smooth shopping flow in Korean: ask the price → check discounts/sales → (if possible) bargain politely → pay → ask for packing and a receipt.
Important Note: Where Bargaining Works (and Where It Doesn’t)
In Korea, bargaining is not common everywhere.
- Big supermarkets / department stores / franchises: Prices are usually fixed. Bargaining is rare. Instead, ask about sales, coupons, membership discounts, promotions.
- Traditional markets / small independent shops: Sometimes you can get a small discount, but you should speak softly and politely.
Key mindset: Not “Make it cheaper!” but a polite question + a gentle request.

8 Core Expressions (Casual vs Polite)
Learn both versions so you can adjust your tone.
- 할인돼요? → 할인되나요? (Is it discounted?)
- 세일해요? → 세일 중인가요? (Is it on sale?)
- 이거 얼마예요? → 이거 얼마인가요? (How much is this?)
- 좀 더 싸게 해주실 수 있어요? → …해주실 수 있을까요? (Could you make it a bit cheaper?)
- 조금만 깎아주세요. → 조금만 깎아주실 수 있을까요? (Could you give me a small discount?)
- 현금이면 할인돼요? → 현금이면 할인되나요? (Is there a cash discount?)
- 두 개 사면 더 싸요? → 두 개 사면 더 저렴해요? (Is it cheaper if I buy two?)
- 영수증 주세요. → 영수증 부탁드려요. (Please give me a receipt.)
Beginner tip: “-돼요?” sounds natural and casual. “-되나요?” sounds more polite.
5 Useful Sentence Patterns
- Ask the price
- 이거 얼마예요? (How much is this?)
- Check sales/discounts
- 할인돼요? / 세일 중이에요? (Is it discounted / on sale?)
- 지금 행사예요? (Is there a promotion now?)
- Add a condition
- 현금이면 할인돼요? (Cash discount?)
- 두 개 사면 더 싸요? (Cheaper for two?)
- Gentle bargaining (safe, polite)
- 좀 더 싸게 해주실 수 있을까요?
- 혹시 조금만 깎아주실 수 있을까요?
(Adding 혹시 = “by any chance” makes it much softer.)
- Finish the purchase
- 그럼 이걸로 할게요. (Then I’ll take this.)
- 포장해 주세요. (Please pack it.)
- 영수증 부탁드려요. (Receipt, please.)
Mini Dialogue 1: Clothing Store (Checking a Discount)
A: 이거 얼마예요?
B: 4만 원이에요.
A: 세일 중이에요?

Note: “3만 원대” means “in the 30,000 won range.”
