American Learns Korean Day12 If Day11 trained the “last 5 seconds at the register” (straw/napkins/points), American Learns Korean Day12 upgrades the earlier moment: customizing your order before you pay.

This is where many American learners freeze. Ordering the drink is easy. But the moment you try to add preferences, sentences get longer, pronunciation slips, and you end up saying “Just… normal, please.”

So Day12 follows one rule:

Don’t make one long sentence. Use short sentence blocks.

Today, you’ll automate exactly three routines:

Ice control
Sweetness control
Size change

For iced drinks: 얼음 빼 주세요 / 얼음 조금만 넣어 주세요
For sweet drinks: 덜 달게 해 주세요 / 시럽 빼 주세요
For sizing: 사이즈 업 돼요?

Core Phrases (8 you actually need)

얼음 빼 주세요. — No ice, please.
얼음 조금만 넣어 주세요. — Just a little ice, please.
덜 달게 해 주세요. — Make it less sweet, please.
시럽 빼 주세요. — No syrup, please.
샷 추가해 주세요. — Add an extra shot, please.
사이즈 업 돼요? — Can I size up?
따뜻한 걸로 주세요. — Make it hot, please.

Key pattern:

Requests use 주세요 / 해 주세요
“Is it possible?” questions use 돼요?

Pronunciation & Intonation (Only what matters today)

덜 (less): Say it clearly. If it’s too weak, it can sound like 더 (more).
시럽 (syrup): Don’t overthink it. Memorize the full chunk: 시럽 빼 주세요.
사이즈 업 돼요?: Raise the tone at the end (돼요↗) so it sounds like a real question.
조금만 (just a little): This is your friendly softener. Very useful in real cafés.

Script 1: Iced Americano (Size + Ice)

Customer: 아메리카노 아이스로 하나 주세요.
Staff: 네, 사이즈는 어떻게 드릴까요?
Customer: 사이즈 업 돼요?
Staff: 네, 돼요.
Customer: 그럼 사이즈 업 해 주세요. 얼음 조금만 넣어 주세요.
Staff: 네, 알겠습니다.

Best real-life order:
Order → size → customization (ice)

Script 2: Sweet Drink (Less Sweet + Syrup Control)

Customer: 바닐라 라떼 아이스로 하나 주세요.
Staff: 네.
Customer: 덜 달게 해 주세요.
Staff: 네, 알겠습니다.
Customer: (optional) 시럽 빼 주세요.
Staff: 네.

Important: You do not need both.
Start with 덜 달게 해 주세요 only. Add “no syrup” later if you want.

Script 3: Answering Staff Questions in 2 Seconds (Real-life)

Staff: 아이스로 드릴까요, 따뜻하게 드릴까요?
You: 아이스로 주세요. / 따뜻한 걸로 주세요.

Staff: 사이즈 업 하실까요?
You: 네, 해 주세요. / 아니요, 괜찮아요.

Staff: 얼음 많이 넣어 드릴까요?
You: 조금만 넣어 주세요. / 얼음 빼 주세요.

These are extremely common questions. If you can answer fast, you won’t freeze.

Two short sentences sound natural and reduce mistakes.

6 Common Mistakes (Fix them now)

Saying 덜 달게요… and trailing off

Finish clearly: 덜 달게 해 주세요.

Only saying “No ice” in English

Your Day12 goal is one Korean line: 얼음 빼 주세요.

Saying 사이즈 업 돼요? like a statement

Raise your tone at the end (돼요↗).

Trying to say everything at once

Ice, sweetness, shots… Don’t stack them. One at a time, short.

Freezing when staff asks questions

Use the “correct answer set” in Script 3.

Sounding too demanding

Use 조금만 to soften: 얼음 조금만…
