Polite Requests with -주세요
1) Today’s goal
Today you’ll learn to make polite requests using -주세요, which is more natural than just saying “I want…”
- 물 좀 주세요. = Please give me some water.
- 사진 좀 찍어 주세요. = Please take a picture.
- 도와주세요. = Please help me.
- 천천히 말해 주세요. = Please speak slowly.
2) Two core patterns you must know
2-1) Noun + 주세요 = “Please give me (noun)”
This is perfect for cafés, restaurants, stores.
- 물 주세요.
- 커피 한 잔 주세요.
- 영수증 주세요.
- 메뉴판 주세요.
2-2) Verb + (으)세요 + 주세요 = “Please do (verb)”
Use this when you want someone to do an action.
- 여기 앉아 주세요. (sit → 앉아 주세요)
- 사진 찍어 주세요. (take → 찍어 주세요)
- 천천히 말해 주세요. (speak → 말해 주세요)
- 문 좀 닫아 주세요. (close → 닫아 주세요)
Key difference
- 물 주세요 = request a thing (noun)
- 찍어 주세요 = request an action (verb)
3) Add 좀 to sound softer
Adding 좀 makes your request feel more gentle and natural.
- 물 좀 주세요.
- 여기 좀 봐 주세요.
- 잠깐 좀 도와 주세요.
Here, 좀 is more of a “softener” than “a little.”
4) 주세요 vs 줘요 (similar, but different level)
- 주세요: safe polite default (shops, strangers, work)
- 줘요: more casual (friends), but 주세요 is still safest
Beginner rule: With strangers or in public places, choose 주세요.

6) Mini-Dialogue 1: café order (Noun + 주세요)
A: 어서 오세요. 주문 도와드릴까요?
B: 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요. 그리고 물도 주세요.
A: 뜨거운 거요, 아이스요?
B: 아이스로 주세요.
Note: “~로 주세요” is common in ordering (“Make it iced, please.”).
7) Mini-Dialogue 2: asking for a photo (Verb + 주세요)
A: 저기요, 죄송한데요.
B: 네, 뭐 도와드릴까요?
A: 사진 좀 찍어 주세요.
B: 네, 어디를 배경으로 할까요?
A: 여기서 찍어 주세요. 감사합니다!
