Korean basic adverbs 아주 조금 많이 잘

Korean Basic Adverbs 아주, 조금, 많이, 잘
1) Today’s goal

You’ll be able to use these four adverbs naturally:

  • 아주 = very (strong emphasis)
  • 조금 = a little (small amount / softens your tone)
  • 많이 = a lot (quantity or frequency)
  • 잘 = well / good at / correctly / (sounds/looks) clearly

Key placement rule (most important):
Korean adverbs usually sound natural right before the verb/adjective.

  • 많이 먹어요 (eat a lot)
  • 아주 예뻐요 (very pretty)
  • 잘해요 (do well)
  • 조금 어려워요 (a bit difficult)

2) 아주 = “very” (strong emphasis)

Use 아주 when you really want to emphasize.

  • 오늘 아주 추워요. = It’s very cold today.
  • 그 사람은 아주 친절해요. = That person is very kind.
  • 이 음식 아주 맛있어요. = This food is really delicious.
  • 길이 아주 복잡해요. = The road is very crowded/complicated.

Speaking tip: 아주 is stronger than “조금.” Use it when you want a clear punch.

3) 조금 = “a little” (quantity + polite/soft tone)

조금 is not only “small amount.” In real conversation, it’s also a softener.

  • 물 조금 주세요. = Please give me a little water. (sounds polite)
  • 오늘 조금 바빠요. = I’m a bit busy today. (soft refusal)
  • 이거 조금 어려워요. = This is a little difficult.
  • 조금 천천히 말해 주세요. = Please speak a bit more slowly.

Key idea: “조금 어려워요” often sounds more natural than a hard “안 돼요 / 못 해요.”

4) 많이 = “a lot” (amount OR frequency)

많이 works in two common ways:

4-1) Quantity (a lot of something)

  • 밥을 많이 먹어요. = I eat a lot of rice/food.
  • 물을 많이 마셔요. = I drink a lot of water.

4-2) Frequency / intensity (a lot, often, a lot lately)

  • 요즘 운동을 많이 해요. = I work out a lot these days.
  • 한국어를 많이 연습해요. = I practice Korean a lot.
  • 요즘 일이 많이 바빠요. = Work is very busy lately.

5) 잘 = the most useful one (well / clearly / correctly)

잘 is extremely versatile.

5-1) Skill / performance (do well)

  • 한국어 잘 해요. = I’m good at Korean.
  • 운전 잘 해요. = I drive well.
  • 설명을 잘 해요. = I explain well.

5-2) Perception (clearly / well)

  • 소리가 잘 들려요. = I can hear it well.
  • 화면이 잘 보여요. = I can see the screen well.

5-3) Knowledge (correctly / fully)

  • 그 규칙을 잘 알아요. = I know that rule well.
  • 저는 아직 잘 모르겠어요. = I’m not really sure yet. (very natural!)

Must-memorize sentence:

  • 저는 아직 잘 모르겠어요. = I’m not sure yet.

6) Quick combo list (high-frequency chunks)

  • 아주 좋아요 / 아주 예뻐요 / 아주 바빠요
  • 조금 쉬워요 / 조금 어려워요 / 조금 천천히요
  • 많이 먹어요 / 많이 해요 / 많이 바빠요
  • 잘 해요 / 잘 알아요 / 잘 모르겠어요

A: 커피 맛이 어때요? (How’s the coffee?)
B: 아주 맛있어요. 근데 저는 단 건 조금 싫어해요.

B: 감사합니다. 아직 단어는 잘 모르겠어요. (Thanks. I’m not sure about vocab yet.)

9) Drills (mouth training)

Drill 1: Put the adverb right before the verb/adjective

Say fast (swap the last word each time):

  • 아주 + 좋아요 / 예뻐요 / 추워요 / 바빠요
  • 조금 + 쉬워요 / 어려워요 / 바빠요 / 천천히 말해 주세요
  • 많이 + 먹어요 / 마셔요 / 공부해요 / 일해요
  • 잘 + 해요 / 알아요 / 모르겠어요 / 들려요 / 보여요

Drill 2: “잘” 3-set (must do)

  • 잘해요.
  • 잘 알아요.
  • 잘 모르겠어요.

Drill 3: Make your Korean softer (조금 / 잘 모르겠어요)

Turn direct sentences into softer Korean:

  • 몰라요 → 아직 잘 모르겠어요.
